This vast region of France is one of many contrasts, enjoying a verdant landscape, yet second only to the Mediterranean coast in hours of sunshine. Comprising 4 departments – Deux Sevres, Charente-Maritime, Charente and Vienne, it is steeped in history, with mediaeval (especially Romanesque) churches and sculpture much in evidence. The region stretches from the Atlantic coast with the towns of La Rochelle, Royan, Saintes, through the Marais Poitevin (Venise Vert) and its network of waterways, to the Charente River, meandering peacefully through picturesque towns and villages, flanked by vineyards near Cognac, on its way to the sea.
