Map of Area
Sauze Vaussais
In Deux Sevres, closely bordering the departments of Charentes and Vienne, Sauze Vaussais is a village within easy reach of the N10. Markets are held twice weekly and the village is well provided with a range of shops and services including two boulangeries, a small hotel, bars and restaurant. There is an outdoor pool, tennis courts and small lake with picnic area, children’s play area and walks.

Close at hand are the towns of Civray and Ruffec, both on the river Charente, and ideal picnic spots. Also close by, are the towns of Chef Boutonne and Melle, the former boasting its Chateau de Javarzay and  the latter with three Romanesque churches and Roman silver mine. Both have ancient lavoirs – communal areas where women-folk met to do their laundry in special areas adjacent to the river. There are no fewer than 49 Romanesque churches in the surrounding towns and villages, one of which is in Sauze Vaussais.
Poitou-Charentes

This vast region of France is one of many contrasts, enjoying a verdant landscape, yet second only to the Mediterranean coast in hours of sunshine. Comprising 4 departments – Deux Sevres, Charente-Maritime, Charente and Vienne, it is steeped in history, with mediaeval (especially Romanesque) churches and sculpture much in evidence. The region stretches from the Atlantic coast with the towns of La Rochelle, Royan, Saintes, through the Marais Poitevin (Venise Vert) and its network of waterways, to the Charente River, meandering peacefully through picturesque towns and villages, flanked by vineyards near Cognac, on its way to the sea.
